"Romance is Everything"

Gertrude Stein wrote: "Romance is everything."

Her sentiment strikes a chord in me today.

I looked up the word romance: "A quality or feeling of mystery, excitement, and remoteness from everyday life."

Yes.

This definition describes my heart and soul, mind and emotions as winter unfolds and settles in over me, with spring in hot pursuit. Foggy short days, cold shivering my bones, gray skies occasioned with sunshine, all intruded upon by earthy offerings promising it will not be this way forever.

There is comfort in hibernation. Seasonal restrictions serve as hugs, permission to rest, to contemplate, even to play a little at things busier seasons keep at bay.

Alas, in time, I will gladly give over that comfort to warmth, color, delicious scents, longer days, and to incubating gardens bursting with joie de vivre.

Enjoy the romance of the early months with me. The gifts they give sustain us throughout the remaining days, weeks, and months of this happy new year.
