Man in the Moon

Fledgling amateur that I am, I have a hard time capturing a decent photo of the moon. But I do adore the moon! It comforts me somehow, like a big granddaddy in the sky watching over me.

A few nights ago my husband and I arrived back into town from a fatiguing weekend of 'parent care.' A gigantic orange moon - with a very visible smiling man of craters on it - had just lifted from the Cascade Mountain Range to greet us. The weatherman said it was closer to the Earth because of solstice, mid-summer, thus the up-close and personal viewing, and dark coloration. The 'why's' don't concern me; I am just glad to have been outdoors, available to see the sight. I hope you were able to get a good summer solstice moon viewing, too!

(I had my camera on a different setting for the second photo so the orange is washed out. Like I said, I don't know what I'm doing - but I try. ;)

"In the east a shaded moon is hanging lazily, I do believe I saw the old man smile. I do believe I did. I do believe that he's been laughing all the while." ~~ John Denver

If you come to my blog you can seem the pictures by scrolling down. For today's post I chose a solar halo for my contribution. I invite you to come see. -- Margy

  6. Cherie: I know that problem with the moon and you did a nice job with your SWF photos.

  8. I love the moon too. I've tried several times this week with it being "full" but the photos turned out terrible. Oh well.

  10. Cherie,
You do well with your camera. To even take the initiative to get the shots after a tiring weekend is commendable! But these are good, and they deliver a moon I didn't take the time to see otherwise. So thank very, very much!

  11. Indeed, the moon shots (or any night photography) can be difficult. "Louis" thanks you for your kind comments about his dance between the moon and the fog at midnight. What "Louis" wasn't able to capture in his shot was how the wind was making the fog swirl around the moon. He also wasn't able to capture just how the wind made the thicker fog over the racetrack billow like smoke in a raging fire. What "Louis" saw from his balcony was a powerful image. What "Louis" captured on film was a timid imitation of the real thing. "Louis" is hampered by not having a more sophisticated camera/lens setup and more importantly for night shots, a tripod. Camera shake is the enemy of low light exposures.

You've posted a fine Sky Watch! Keep 'em coming!

  13. Thanks everyone for the encouragement! Glad the orange moon was pleasing in a photograph - it was much better with my own eyes of course, but hey, whatcha gonna do.

    Tshs: Keep trying! ;)

  14. Cherie, these moons are gorgeous!
Especially dramatic is the one with lines.
So you tried different settings? Good for you. I don't even know what most of the camera buttons are for. hehe
I was out walking near the spring when that same moon rose. Would you believe, it looked so much like a man in the moon that I started talking to him. LOL But only the jackals answered.
So glad your mom is getting better. Take care of yourself, too.

  18. Super shots! Doesn't seem to be in my genes to be able to do nearly as well, but I keep trying. After seeing my disappointing shots, I can always come here and enjoy yours:):)
